The cardiovascular system is rich in fluid mechanical processes. Starting from the simple steady flow of a newtonian fluid through a pipe of constant diameter to that of a pulsatile non-newtonian flow through a distensible tube of varying cross section with bifurcations and bends has many inportant things to be considered from the fluid mechanics standpoint. The heart on the other hand, acting as a non-sucking pulstile positive displacement pump arranged in series offers a wide array of problems of interest to the student of the mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines.
